Active Release Technique

Columbia Integrated Health Centre is excited to provide Active Release Technique, also known as ART, to patients in the downtown New Westminster area along Columbia Street and surrounding communities such as Queensborough, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Surrey, Maple Ridge, White Rock, & Vancouver.

Active Release Technique is a very specialized form of rehabilitative soft tissue work. Its' principles are based on the premise that soft tissues such as muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves, and fascia may become damaged through acute trauma or repetitive stress injuries. When this occurs, cross fibers of scar tissue form adhesions and disarray of normal fibers which results in decreased blood flow, decreased elasticity, and decreased energy of the structures involved. This in turn leads to a direct loss of function, symptoms of pain, edema, and many other negative physiological effects. Clinicians that have training in this technique and utilize it include Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, Registered Massage Therapists, & Athletic Trainers.

All types of musculoskeletal injuries may be treated with ART and all types of patients may benefit from ART. This includes the 9 to 5 office administrator, the weekend warrior, or the ultra-elite athlete. As a matter of fact, ART is the preferred modality of choice by Iron Man athletes during both training and Race Days.

If your are suffering an injury that isn't resolving or your current treatment seems to have plateaued, it may be worthwhile to have an ART therapist assess to see if ART can help!
